Association Franco-Japonaise Sakura Le Mans

The Franco-Japanese Association Sakura Le Mans (日仏友好協会さくら) is a non-profit organization founded in 1999 to promote cultural exchange between France and Japan, especially between the city of Le Mans and the Land of the Rising Sun.

Behind the name Sakura, which refers to Japan’s iconic cherry blossoms, lies a true commitment to building meaningful connections, linguistic, artistic, and human, between two rich and captivating cultures. The association serves as a bridge between the people of Le Mans and Japan through a wide range of inclusive activities open to everyone.

Driven by passionate volunteers, Sakura thrives on a warm and welcoming spirit. It offers a space for learning, discovery, and connection, whether you're a curious beginner or a seasoned enthusiast.

What does Sakura Assoication offer?

Japanese language classes and conversation workshops

At the heart of Sakura’s mission are its Japanese language classes. Open to all levels, these courses offer a supportive environment to either start learning Japanese or deepen your knowledge. Lessons go beyond grammar and kanji—they often include essential cultural insights to help students better understand Japan as a whole.

In addition, Sakura runs a Japanese conversation club, perfect for practicing speaking in a relaxed setting. These regular meetups help participants gain confidence, ask questions, discuss various topics, and explore the language beyond the textbooks.

Cultural workshops and Japanese events

The association also hosts a variety of themed workshops such as calligraphy (shodô), origami, Japanese cooking, tea ceremony, and flower arranging (ikebana). These hands-on experiences are a chance to dive into Japanese culture through its traditions, aesthetics, and mindful approach to craft.

Throughout the year, Sakura organizes special events like film screenings, lectures, community gatherings, art exhibits, and seasonal celebrations—including Japanese New Year and hanami (cherry blossom viewing). These highlights offer locals a chance to experience the beauty and richness of Japan—right in the heart of Le Mans.

A Local Community with a Global Vision

Sakura plays a key role in the local cultural landscape, collaborating with other community and cultural organizations, and fostering connections between French and Japanese residents in the region. It also acts as a cultural mediator, encouraging dialogue, exchange, and mutual understanding.

Through its ongoing efforts and strong local presence, Sakura brings an authentic, living Japan to Sarthe—far beyond the usual clichés.
